Journey to Healing Curriculum
Journey to Healing is a curriculum designed to support therapists in their work with survivors of partner abuse. It includes 41 handouts that can be used in individual or group therapy, along with suggested group agendas for those facilitating groups.
This curriculum integrates psychoeducational and therapeutic approaches that my clients found empowering. The handouts are categorized into seven types of intervention, all aligning with Bruce Perry’s 3Rs of Trauma Therapy:
Regulate
- Self-regulation— Addresses common challenges to self-care and encourages emotional management techniques that therapists can tailor to individual client needs.
Relate
- End the Silence—Recognizes the importance of survivors’ stories being heard and validated. Handouts offer content to improve their safety and sense of agency.
- Domination Systems— Explores how gender role socialization and past trauma influence survivors’ decision-making and healing, helping them recognize external pressures shaping their choices.
Reason
- Mind Mastery—Addresses psychological impacts of abuse and enhances resilience.
- Boundary Repair— Reinforces individual rights and attends to common issues resulting from boundary violations.
- Find Your Voice— Builds confidence in communication while assessing the risks of changing behavior in abusive relationships. This intervention is supported by Mind Mastery and Boundary Repair to provide a strong foundation for self-advocacy.
- Post-traumatic Growth—Helps clients recognize their progress, support ongoing growth, and plan coping strategies. Useful for mid-therapy evaluations and concluding therapy.
By using this structured approach, therapists can provide survivors with tools to reclaim their voices, strengthen their self-trust, and move toward healing.
